Lavender 'Vera' (Lavandula angustifolia 'Vera')

Key Characteristics

  • Origin: 'Vera' lavender, botanically known as *Lavandula angustifolia* 'Vera', is considered an heirloom or "true" English lavender. It is thought to be one of the original species lavenders and has been cultivated for a long time, possibly for centuries. Its origins are in the Mediterranean region.
  • Patent Status: As an older, well-established cultivar of *Lavandula angustifolia*, 'Vera' lavender is not patented. It can be freely propagated and sold.
  • Flower Production: 'Vera' is highly prized for its intensely fragrant, slender spikes of lavender-blue flowers. The flowers are particularly rich in essential oils, making it a favorite for aromatherapy, potpourri, and culinary uses. It typically blooms in mid-summer, with the potential for a second, smaller flush of blooms later in the season if deadheaded.
  • Plant Size and Appearance: 'Vera' is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 1.5-2 feet (45-60 cm) and a spread of 2-2.5 feet (60-75 cm). It has narrow, silvery-gray to gray-green leaves that are also highly aromatic.
  • Flowering Time: 'Vera' typically blooms in mid-summer. It may produce a second, smaller bloom later in the season if the spent flowers are removed (deadheading).
  • Hardiness: 'Vera' is known for its excellent cold hardiness among English lavenders, generally hardy in USDA Zones 5 through 10 (some sources specify 4-9 or 5-9). It is a perennial in these zones, retaining its foliage through mild winters.
  • Pollination: The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a valuable plant for pollinator gardens.
  • Growing Conditions:
    • Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily) for optimal growth, abundant flowering, and the strongest fragrance.
    • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, even poor, soil. It prefers slightly alkaline to neutral soil (pH 6.7-7.3). Good drainage is crucial, especially in winter, as lavender is susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions. Sandy or gravelly soil is ideal.
    • Watering: Once established, 'Vera' lavender is quite drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, especially during the winter months.
    • Fertilizing: Generally does not require rich soil or heavy fertilization. In fact, overly fertile soil can reduce the intensity of its fragrance and lead to leggy growth. A light application of compost in the spring is usually sufficient. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. Some recommend a yearly application of dolomite lime.
    • Spacing: Space plants 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart to allow for good air circulation, which helps prevent fungal diseases. For hedges, space plants about 18 inches apart.
    • Pruning: Prune annually after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage more blooms in the following year. Cut back the flower stalks and about one-third of the plant's foliage, being careful not to cut into the old wood.
    • Propagation: Can be propagated by seeds (though germination can be slow and sometimes erratic, often benefiting from a period of cold stratification), cuttings (semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer are usually successful), or layering.
  • Uses: 'Vera' lavender is highly versatile:
    • Aromatherapy: Its essential oil is prized for its calming and relaxing properties.
    • Culinary: The flowers and leaves can be used sparingly to add a floral note to baked goods, beverages, and savory dishes.
    • Crafts: Excellent for drying and using in potpourri, sachets, wreaths, and other crafts due to its strong, long-lasting fragrance and beautiful flower spikes.
    • Ornamental: Its silvery foliage and purple flowers make it an attractive addition to herb gardens, borders, rock gardens, and containers. It's also effective as an edging plant.
    • Attracting Pollinators: The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
    • Cut Flowers: The flower spikes are excellent for fresh and dried flower arrangements. Harvest for drying when just a few buds have opened for the best color and fragrance retention.
    • Medicinal: Traditionally used for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and sleep-aid properties. (Consult a healthcare professional for medicinal use).
    • Pest Repellent: Lavender is known to repel some insects, such as moths and mosquitoes. It is also considered deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Wildlife Value: Highly attractive to bees and butterflies, contributing to pollinator gardens. It is also deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Ornamental Value: The silvery-gray foliage provides year-round interest, and the abundant purple flowers create a beautiful display in summer. Its compact and tidy growth habit makes it a desirable garden plant.
  • Potential Issues: Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained, overly wet soils. Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal diseases. Over-fertilizing can lead to weak, leggy growth and reduced fragrance.

Great Watch!
Color: Black/Silver-Tone
I bought this watch after the resin strap on my old Armitron watch broke. I was disappointed to find that armitron doesn't make my old watch anymore, so I had to find a replacement. I did extensive research and finally settled on this watch. I needed a rugged, waterproof, backlit, time-and-date + day of week watch. I also needed a watch with a durable strap, because the resin strap sport watches only last 2 or 3 years, which is how long I had my old one. I love the mid-size design of this watch. It fits well and looks really cool. I bought a used like-new one because it was cheaper and it arrived in perfect condition, just without the instructions or original packaging. It is easy to set, easy to read, and the backlighting is just the right brightness. Setting it accurately is tricky, but I've developed my own system to only be one second off, if that. The band is slightly itchy, but it should break in. Overall, I love my new watch and I'm happy that I found something that can take a beating and still work!

Quality watch at a reasonable price
Color: Black/Red
Velcro-closure on the tough fabric band is comfortable and very secure. This beautiful sports watch allows for 12 or 24-hour timekeeping, and is easy to set. Wearers can program 2 entirety different times using the "Time1" and "Time 2" settings, very useful for travel.

Good Watch; Bad Strap
Color: Blue/Black
The watch is like many other I've worn, Timex included, and has all the features I want in a standard watch. I like the colors which are very similar to my last Timex which I've had to abandon due to failure of the wrist band after many years of daily use and the dearth of stores which replace straps. The watch itself is reliable and works well, but I do not like the velcro strap. I have very small wrists and searched a lot before deciding on this watch with an adjustable strap unhindered by the placement of buckle and holes. However, the strap is still too big to fit me well and it is tedious to align both sides of the velcro. Also, the velcro will catch my sleeves or other parts of my clothing every now and then and is avoidable only through meticulous placment of the two sides of velcro. I myself can't replace a strap with a better one because I don't know how, but if you can and have large enough wrists, then this may be the watch for you. If the manufacture or anyone else knows where one can purchase a small wrist band where the sellers will remove the one that I now have with a new, better fitting one, I wish there were a way that you could tell me. I do wish the watch were flatter because my sleeves are hard to move back and forth over it and it's also in the way of typing on my computer as well as tucking sheets in between mattress and headboard. (I can't rate the light because I haven't yet looked for the switch, and its water resistance I can't comment upon because I have not and will not subject the watch to water.)

Good Sport Watch
Color: Blue/Black
This is a good sport watch. I wear these to work in all sorts of conditions...and they take a beating. I have to get the unisex watches/bands as I have thick wrists for a woman and women's watchbands generally don't fit me. I can't wear the metal watch bands because when I flex my wrist they break. I can't wear the leather bands because when I sweat the band just deteriorates and falls apart. These woven bands are just perfect. I also like that it is velcro. That way you can adjust it perfectly to your wrist. I have worn these watches for nearly 15 years. It has two time functions - so that you can have regular time and maybe the time in another country. It has a split lap stop watch so that you can time each lap as well as your full run. Time, date, alarm, and hour beep if you so desire. It also has a back light which is really handy to tell time in the dark. Only problem with that is at about the year mark, the battery is so low that the light will come on, but the numbers disappear. But, well, it is what it is. Some reviewers have complained that the band is rather small fitting around the wrist. I am a woman and I bought a womans Timex once. The band was EXTREMELY small and barely fit me at all. It would come off a lot of the time because there was barely any velcro to wrap around. This watch is probably more of a unisex watch. Not a woman's per se, but not a big man's watch either. It is about in the middle. I have a 7.5" wrist and that is about as large of a wrist that this watch will fit. The women's watch that I had previously had would only fit a 7" wrist.

Great no frills watch, love it.
Color: Blue/Black
This watch is a really nice and is perfect for me. It tells the time (duh!), the date and has a stopwatch feature I never use. Mostly I like that it is a no frills product, but it does its job. This is great for people that actually want something that tells the time and not some fancy gold bracelet to impress the ladies. Although I spend most of my time in front of a computer, I imagine this piece would be great for someone with an active lifestyle (biking, running, etc.). The watch itself is mostly plastic and watch-proof and the band is a fabric velcro. For a while I had the older model with a rubber strap and I like this new model much better. The strap is comfortable and easy to take on and off. I wish the strap was a little bigger though, it might be too small for someone with really fat arms. It does have an indiglo feature although I had the older model and the indiglo died after like 6 months. Hopefully this one will last. What can I say, its a watch. If you are looking for something simple with a classic design, look no further.
